What are bed bugs?

Bed bugs are parasitic insects that feed exclusively on blood, especially human blood. The name comes from the preferred habitat: beds. They are mostly active at night but can be observed during the day in large populations. Although the bugs can be infected with several human diseases, there is no conclusive proof that these diseases are transmitted to people. Bed bugs generally are attracted to the sleeping host by carbon dioxide exhaled during breathing. Prior to feeding, the bugs insert their mouthparts, which resemble a syringe, into the skin and inject saliva. The saliva contains an anticoagulant and a painkiller. Consequently, people do not feel the bite.

Are you sure you have bed bugs and not another type of pest?

Several types of pests feed on human blood, like ticks, fleas, and mosquitos. In the case of bed bugs, there are definite indicators of a bed bug infestation. Do you have small brownish or black spots appearing on sheets, dust ruffles, or mattress covers? Another place to check for bed bugs is around the folds of the box spring fabric or on bedclothes are indications of their presence. We can check your home or business quickly and easily, and help you formulate a plan to eliminate these pests from your environment.

How we treat bed bugs… Thermal Treatment:

Although chemical treatments are available, control of bed bug infestations is best accomplished by exposure to heat. There is a 100% mortality of all stages of bed bugs if exposed to heat exceeding 135 degrees for more than 2 minutes. The temperature of your room will be raised above 125 degrees Fahrenheit, which is the temperature needed to kill adult bed bugs, bed bug nymphs, and bed bug eggs. To ensure that all bed bugs are eliminated, our team must keep the room at that temperature for 4 hours to monitor the infestation. We monitor the temperature during that time and use our state-of-the-art monitoring equipment and sensors to ensure the heat is evenly distributed across the room. A thermal gun records temperatures in “cold” areas, such as books, pictures, and clothing. We don’t want to leave any cooler air pockets where bugs could hide and survive.

At the start of the service, we will apply a residual material to any cracks or crevices at the baseboard area. This will ensure that if any bed bugs attempted to escape into the walls, they will contact the residual material as they try and escape. As a final step, we pack up our equipment and put your box springs and mattresses back on your bed frame. After a short cooling down period, you can re-enter your home and begin living life completely free of bed bugs and bed bug bites.
