House Crickets

House Crickets can become a severe pest problem when they invade your home. They can awaken you at night, and even prevent you from falling back asleep due to the male's mating song.

HOW TO IDENTIFY HOUSE CRICKETS

House Crickets in the adult size are 3/4 to 7/8 inches long. They are yellowish- brown with 3 dark bands that cross their head from eye to eye. Their legs resemble those of a grasshopper in that that they use them to propel themselves. They are fully winged and can fly but mostly crawl or hop. They prefer the outdoors until their population gets too large.

THE BIOLOGY OF HOUSE CRICKETS

The house cricket is an outside pest. Outdoors, under ideal conditions, the female can lay approximately 700 eggs. She places these eggs in suitable areas for the hatching of the next generation. Indoors, the females usually lay fewer eggs - up to 100 eggs. These overwintering eggs hatch in late summer with only one generation per year.

WHERE DO THE CUSTOMERS SEE HOUSE CRICKETS?

They are usually first seen crawling or short-hopping along in the yard starting in early to mid summer.

As the summer goes by, populations will continue to grow larger and larger. By the time fall arrives, adults will be wandering into structures seeking moisture but also to look for a nice warm place to pass the winter.

They are usually seen on the lower levels first but have been spotted in light fixtures in severe infestations. They usually are not a problem until they get inside. They are nocturnal and most active at night.

Most people like the sound of crickets chirping outside. But once inside the house the singing can become unbearable. The constant and/or sporadic chirping at night will awaken you and a lot of the time prevents you from returning back asleep.

When you are awakened you go to get the intruder but when you get close, the male stops chirping. When you go back to bed and try to get back to sleep and when all is quiet, he starts to chirp again and the cycle starts all over. Sometimes this prevents you from getting any sleep the rest of the night.

The male rubs its' front wings together and this creates the chirping or mating song. Very disturbing!

FEEDING PREFERENCES OF HOUSE CRICKETS

Once inside, they will feed on variety of fabrics eating out large holes compared to the small holes typical of the clothes moths. These fabrics can be made or natural fibers like wool and silk.
